We Got the Green Flag!

This year we have been working hard on waste reduction at European Schooling Helsinki through Comenius and the Eco-Schools programme:
“Eco-Schools is an international programme for environmental education and management, which aims to raise students' awareness of sustainable development issues through classroom study as well as school and community action.
With the emphasis placed on a democratic and participatory approach, the programme encourages children and youth to take an active role in how their school can be run for the benefit of the environment, highlighting the importance of civic values.
Successful Eco-Schools are awarded the Green Flag, an internationally acknowledged symbol for environmental excellence.”

We are very proud to announce that after reviewing our work, the Finnish Eco Schools Committee has awarded us the Green Flag!
Here are some activities that we did this year:
- a Green Flag committee comprised of students to plan and evaluate our activities
- a visit to the landfill near Helsinki to see how waste is sorted and treated
- recycling workshops to teach students how and why waste is sorted
- an Exchange Your Toys –day to learn that we don’t always have to buy new things
- Biospies checking during snack and lunch that students eat everything they take
- collecting and reusing scrap paper, bits and pieces of cardboard and other materials in different activities: note taking, arts and crafts etc...
- evaluating our recycling practices and making them more environmentally friendly
Next academic year we are going to continue our efforts with a second theme which will be either electricity or water. We encourage all the other schools to find more about the Eco-Schools programme and to think about joining us!
